Troy Smith is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who joined University of Richmond in August 2025. Prior to this role, Troy served as a community-based social worker in Oakland and San Franciso, California with adults who experienced homelessness, severe mental illness, substance use, justice involvement, and complex medical conditions. He utilizes many approaches tailored to each individual while aiming to focus on the role of community, self-empowerment, and self-determination in overcoming mental health challenges. Troy received his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from San Diego State University and his Master of Social Work from San Jose State University.
Troy is originally from California and has lived all over the state, most recently in Berkeley. He is always seeking to expand his connection to the local community through attending events, trying new restaurants, and finding the best sights. Troy loves animals, desserts, and houseplants, and has a variety of hobbies that include playing ice hockey, reading, and playing videogames with friends.
