Medical Withdrawal Information

When a student takes a medical withdrawal from the University of Richmond, the student is expected to get appropriate treatment for the problem necessitating the withdrawal during her/his absence from campus. Before the dean of the student's respective school may make a decision regarding the appropriateness of readmission, the student's treating health care professional(s) must provide information to the University for the purpose of assessing the student's readiness to return to her/his academic program and, if applicable, residential living. A medical withdrawal typically occurs for at least an entire semester (at the discretion of the dean, the summer session may count as a semester). For example, if a student medically withdraws late in the Fall semester, he/she may need to take the Spring semester off as well before applying to return.

Before the Student Leaves

A Medical Withdrawal Agreement form needs to be completed by the dean's office staff, and signed by the student, typically before the student leaves for a medical withdrawal from the university.

When the Student is Ready to Return

When the student is ready to return to the university, an Application for Readmission form must be sent to the dean's office at least four weeks before the first day of classes of the semester the student wishes to return.

The four forms listed below must be completed and submitted to Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) for review at least 4 weeks before the start of classes of the semester the student is requesting to return. CAPS will forward a copy of the forms to the Student Health Center (SHC). CAPS will review the documents for conditions that are primarily psychological and/or psychiatric in nature. SHC staff will review the documents for conditions that are primarily medical/physical in nature. A recommendation regarding readmission will be made to the appropriate dean's office following evaluation of the information.  The dean's office makes the final decision.  If you have questions regarding this process, please contact CAPS staff at (804) 289-8119.

During the time away from campus, it is expected that the student will obtain appropriate treatment for the condition(s) that led to the medical withdrawal. A "Treatment Summary and Recommendations" form, completed by the student's treating professional, must be sent to CAPS at least four weeks before the first day of classes (of the semester the student is asking to return). Only CAPS and SHC offices will keep a copy of this completed form.
